One Output at Block 964,199: The Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Claim the Chain Doesn't Confirm

CryptoMax

The press will call this a quantum breakthrough. The ledger calls it one output.

At block height 964,199 โ€” timestamped August 26, 2026 โ€” StarkWare researchers completed the first Quantum Safe Bitcoin output on Bitcoin mainnet. No network upgrade. No wallet release. No address standard. One hash-locked output, sitting inside Bitcoin Script, proving a mechanism can exist without touching consensus.

That is the entire on-chain footprint. One data point. The ledger remembers what the press forgets.

I did the arithmetic before I did anything else. Bitcoin's 840,000 block was the April 2024 halving. Height 964,199 sits 124,199 blocks later โ€” roughly 862 days at ten-minute spacing. That lands in August 2026. The date and the height agree. This is not a transcription error wearing a roadmap's clothes. The timestamp is anchored to the chain, which means the quantum narrative has a clock, and the clock is closer than the commentariat pretends.

That fact matters. What follows matters more.

StarkWare built its reputation on STARK proofs and the Starknet rollup. Eli Ben-Sasson, one of the STARK protocol's original authors, sits at the center of that work. When this team publishes research, it earns a second read โ€” not because the conclusion is right, but because the cryptography usually is.

Based on my own audit work, I treat every announcement like this one as a legal document that must survive cross-examination. In 2017 I scraped 15,000 Ethereum transactions to test whether Tether's minting matched its claims. It did not. The lesson stuck: a published number is a hypothesis until the chain confirms it.

QSB is StarkWare's bid at a problem Bitcoin has discussed for years and shipped nothing on: post-quantum security. The premise is simple. ECDSA, the signature scheme securing every standard Bitcoin transaction, falls to Shor's algorithm on a sufficiently large quantum computer. Hash functions do not. Grover's algorithm gives a quantum machine only a quadratic speedup against hashing โ€” painful, but not fatal.

The urgency is not invented. Estimates for cryptographically relevant quantum machines keep sliding closer, and "harvest now, decrypt later" assumes an adversary storing today's traffic for tomorrow's key. For a bearer asset like Bitcoin, that logic is uncomfortable. Keys exposed today are spendable later.

So QSB locks assets with hash-based cryptography instead of elliptic curves. No soft fork. No new opcode. No consensus change. The pitch is emergency readiness: a quantum-safe parking spot that works today, on the rules Bitcoin already has.

Bitcoin has heard this promise before. Post-quantum signature proposals have circulated in BIP discussions for years โ€” soft-fork paths, new opcodes, academic papers โ€” and none have shipped. The gap between a proposal and a protocol is where most quantum-safe Bitcoin claims have quietly died.

That framing is the tell. A solution that needs no consensus change is a solution living in the gaps between rules. It is engineering, not protocol design. The team says as much themselves โ€” the long-term answer, they concede, still requires a soft fork to introduce native post-quantum signatures.

Trace the coins, not the claims. Let me do exactly that.

Here is the evidence chain, ordered by what the chain can actually verify.

Cost. The team dropped the GPU cost of producing a QSB output from $320 to roughly $50 โ€” an 84% reduction. That reads like progress until you set it beside the baseline. A standard Bitcoin transaction costs well under a dollar. QSB is still dozens of times more expensive per operation. The optimization curve is real. It is also nowhere near the economics a network needs to absorb volume.

Set that against the alternative. Bitcoin's own path to post-quantum security runs through a soft fork that would introduce native signatures at the consensus layer โ€” cheaper, standard, and relay-compatible by design. QSB is the shortcut around that work, and shortcuts around consensus tend to send the bill somewhere else.

Computation. Each QSB transaction still demands heavy computation. The signature payload is large and the verification load is high. This is the fingerprint of Lamport or Winternitz-style one-time hash signatures โ€” quantum-resistant, but bulky and compute-hungry. The cost and computation numbers match that family almost exactly. Nobody said it out loud. The metrics did.

The forwarding gap. QSB outputs do not conform to Bitcoin Core's default relay rules. Translation: a standard node will not propagate these transactions. They must reach a miner directly, out of band. A user cannot broadcast a QSB transaction and expect the network to carry it. Someone with hash power has to agree to include it. That is a trust dependency wearing a feature's clothes.

The out-of-band requirement also quietly recentralizes trust. A mechanism that ordinary nodes will not relay can only move through miners who choose to cooperate. That is not a neutral property. It is a single point of dependency standing where decentralization is supposed to be.

The missing toolchain. No compatible wallet. No address format. No recovery flow. There is no way for a normal holder to move funds into a QSB output and, more importantly, no documented way to move them back out safely. The scheme is technically executable and practically unusable. Those are different things, and the gap between them is where adoption goes to die.

The exposure that remains. This is the point that should stop the celebration. QSB protects assets at rest โ€” the parked state. Moving assets in or out still runs through conventional transactions, and conventional transactions still use ECDSA. The quantum exposure is not removed. It is relocated. The lock is quantum-safe; the door is not.

There is also no audit trail. The announcement names no independent auditor and no peer-reviewed verification. For a mechanism whose entire value proposition is cryptographic safety, that omission is not a footnote. It is the load-bearing wall.

One output also tells us nothing about throughput. A single mainnet transaction proves the script executes once. It says nothing about behavior under load, under adversarial conditions, or under the mempool pressure that defines real Bitcoin usage. At Dune I have watched single-block anomalies get priced as trends more times than I can count. A sample size of one is not evidence. It is an anecdote with a block number.

Five data points. One conclusion: QSB is a proof of mechanism, not a product. And the mechanism has a hole in it that the marketing will not mention.

Let me size that hole precisely. A barrel is only as strong as its shortest stave. If the entry and exit paths use ECDSA, then the quantum-safe lock protects coins only during the interval they sit still โ€” and every interval has two ends. An adversary with a cryptographically relevant quantum computer does not need to break the lock. They wait at the door.

There is a second absence worth naming. QSB has no token, no funding event, no incentive structure. That sounds like a virtue until you ask what carries it forward. Security layers live or die on integration โ€” wallets, custodians, exchanges, the plumbing that makes a mechanism reachable. All three categories are currently missing. A safety layer with no downstream is not a layer. It is a paper.

A single output is also strategically calibrated. It is enough to generate a block explorer screenshot and a press cycle, and too little to expose the scheme to sustained scrutiny. Demo-sized deployments are rarely accidents.

StarkWare knows all of this. Their own documentation frames QSB as an emergency research solution, explicitly not suitable for broad use. That candor is rare and should be credited. It also means anyone reading this announcement as Bitcoin is now quantum-safe has misread the document in front of them.

Now the part the timeline hides. Efficiency hides the friction points.

The 84% cost cut is the number everyone will quote. It is also the number that matters least. Cost is a curve. Friction is a wall. QSB can drive per-transaction cost to zero and it still will not ship, because the blockers are not economic. They are structural: no relay, no wallet, no recovery, and an entry path that stays quantum-vulnerable.

Correlation is not causation, and here the correlation is loud. Quantum-safe research announcements cluster around quantum-computing headlines. The narrative pulses โ€” it does not compound. A single mainnet output does not change Bitcoin's load, its fee market, or its mining economics. Anyone pricing a position off this block height is pricing a headline, not a flow.

There is a subtler trap. QSB depends on Ethereum L1 upgrades for its complete security story, even though it settles on Bitcoin. A Bitcoin security layer whose completeness is gated by another chain's roadmap is not sovereign. It is borrowed. That dependency never appears in a cost chart. It appears the day one roadmap slips.

And then the honest one, the one the team handed over themselves: the real fix needs a soft fork. That admission cuts both ways. It is intellectually clean. It is also a countdown. The moment Bitcoin ships native post-quantum signatures, QSB's transitional value goes to zero. The team is building a bridge to a destination they know will be paved over.

The competitive risk is symmetrical. If Bitcoin's native post-quantum soft fork lands, QSB's reason to exist evaporates overnight. If it never lands, QSB remains an expensive curiosity that no wallet supports. Either branch ends the same way for the announcement's promotional value.

None of this makes QSB worthless. It makes it early. Early research from a credible team is how protocols eventually get safer, and the team's transparency about the limits is exactly what a healthy field should reward. But early research is a seed, not a harvest, and the market rarely prices the difference.

Which is not a scandal. It is a time-window trade โ€” emergency cover for the gap before the protocol fixes itself. That is a legitimate thing to build. It is not a thing to buy.

Watch the next output, not this one. One hash-locked transaction is a demo. Ten thousand, with a relay path and a recovery flow, is a product. Until the entry and exit paths stop using ECDSA, quantum-safe Bitcoin describes a parking spot โ€” not the road that leads to it.

Silence in the blocks speaks volumes. Right now the blocks are very quiet.
