infiniFi's INFI Split: 55% Insiders, 45% 'Ecosystem,' and a Partial-Reserve Model Underneath

CryptoRover

infiniFi just handed the market four numbers and called it a tokenomics reveal.

Forty-five percent to the ecosystem. Twenty to the team. Twenty to investors. Fifteen to the foundation. No total supply. No unlock schedule. No vesting cliffs. No audit disclosure. No named backers. I ran the allocation through a quick script the second the announcement crossed my feed โ€” and the structure says more than the press release ever will. Fifty-five percent of INFI lands in insider hands. The community gets the remainder, and even that number is doing heavy marketing work.

That's the hook. Now the part the announcement buries two paragraphs down: infiniFi isn't a yield aggregator with a token bolted on. It's running an on-chain partial reserve model for stablecoin deposits โ€” a structure that looks like capital efficiency on a pitch deck and like a bank run on a block explorer.

To place that inside the sector it just walked into: stablecoin yield already has Ethena's USDe printing returns from a neutral delta-hedge, Ondo's USDY backed one-to-one by short-term Treasuries, and MakerDAO's sDAI overcollateralized and battle-tested through two bear markets. Every one of those protocols answers the same question โ€” where does the yield come from? โ€” with a verifiable, on-chain answer. infiniFi answers it with silence. It describes itself as stablecoin deposits plus yield management. That's it. No reserve composition. No underlying chain. No statement on whether the code is open source. No word on who holds the keys to the reserve. For a protocol that will custody user deposits, those aren't footnotes โ€” they're the entire due-diligence file. And every one of them is missing.

Here's where the technical picture sharpens. infiniFi's core design is a partial reserve: the assets backing user deposits are smaller than the deposits themselves, with the gap deployed into investments or lending to generate yield. Read that again. The protocol owes more than it holds, and it services the gap with returns.

That is not a variation on MakerDAO. It's the inversion of it. MakerDAO overcollateralizes โ€” it holds more than it owes, deliberately, because that buffer is the thing that survives a black swan. USDC holds full reserves in short-dated government paper. Both models fail safe. A partial reserve fails by construction the moment withdrawals outpace the liquid slice of the reserve. The higher the yield it advertises, the thinner that slice usually is.

I've watched this movie frame by frame. In May 2022 I traced the Anchor Protocol flash-loan sequence block by block while TerraUSD de-pegged, and the causal chain was identical in shape โ€” a structure promising a yield it could only pay by pulling in the next deposit. Terra's collateral was a sister token. infiniFi's collateral is, as far as anyone can tell, undisclosed. The wrapper is different. The failure mode is not.

The single most dangerous phrase in the entire announcement is "partial reserve." Everything else is downstream of it. If the reserve is Treasuries and the coverage ratio sits above 100%, infiniFi is a conservative, boring product with a governance token attached. If the reserve is a stack of correlated stablecoins and the coverage ratio is 80%, it's a leveraged bet on nobody checking the books at the same time. I have no way to tell you which one it is, and neither does anyone reading the announcement. Nobody has shown the books.

Let me quantify the token side, because the allocation table is where the incentives live. Team at 20% and investors at 20% already sit at the 40% line that token analysts flag as the insider ceiling. Add the 15% foundation โ€” which in most structures is the team wearing a different legal hat โ€” and you reach 55%. The retail float is the minority of a token whose supply cap hasn't even been published. That asymmetry isn't a detail. It's the design.

Two numbers are missing that make every other number useless. The first is total supply: without it, I can't tell whether "45% ecosystem" is 45 million tokens or 4.5 billion, and I can't tell whether INFI has a hard cap or a mint function quietly expanding the float. The second is the unlock schedule. The three-to-six-month window after a token generation event is where insider allocations typically clear their cliffs. Without a vesting table, that window is a blind spot โ€” and blind spots inside a 55%-insider structure tend to resolve in one direction. I've built these models before; the absence of a schedule is not neutral. It's a choice.

I'd want the incentive contract before I believe the ecosystem line. In yield protocols, "ecosystem" almost always means emissions โ€” tokens paid to depositors to inflate total value locked. That isn't community building. That's a customer-acquisition budget denominated in the token, spent to buy deposits that leave the moment the emissions taper. I've scraped enough of these contracts to know the pattern cold: TVL spikes on launch, holds for the length of the emission schedule, then bleeds back out. If infiniFi's 45% is an emissions pool, then "45% to the ecosystem" is really "45% to rent liquidity."

Now stack infiniFi against the field and the differentiation turns uncomfortable. Ethena discloses its hedge and its custody. Ondo discloses its Treasury holdings and its regulatory posture. MakerDAO discloses its collateral and its governance. infiniFi discloses a model โ€” partial reserve โ€” that is strictly riskier than all three, and discloses nothing about the assets behind it. In a market where the winner is usually the protocol with the most transparent yield source, infiniFi is competing on the one axis where opacity is a liability, not a feature.

There's a structural dependency worth naming too. As a yield manager, infiniFi sits downstream of the stablecoin issuers and the underlying assets it allocates into, and upstream of whatever wallets or protocols integrate it. If the reserve holds USDC and USDC wobbles, infiniFi wobbles harder, because its coverage is partial by design. It hasn't disclosed a single downstream integration โ€” which tells me the network effect is thin. A protocol nobody depends on isn't an ecosystem. It's a pool.

Here's the angle the announcement wants you to miss. Everyone will read "45% to the ecosystem" as generosity. It isn't. It's the largest single line item, and in a yield protocol the largest line item is almost always the acquisition budget. The community isn't being handed 45% of the network โ€” it's being handed 45% of the emissions used to buy its own deposits back. Frame it that way and the tokenomics stop looking like a distribution and start looking like a customer-lifetime-value calculation dressed in community colors.

The second blind spot is the foundation. Fifteen percent, no disclosed jurisdiction, no disclosed governance. Offshore foundations exist to hold assets at arm's length from regulators โ€” a legitimate structure, and a convenient one for a protocol whose product is a yield-bearing stablecoin sitting directly in the crosshairs of the SEC and MiCA. A "stablecoin deposit that pays yield" trips the profit-expectation and efforts-of-others prongs of the Howey test almost by default. The partial reserve pushes it further, toward something that looks less like a security and more like unlicensed banking. No license is mentioned anywhere. That absence is the signal.

Watch three things before you touch this. First, the reserve composition and coverage ratio โ€” if those don't get published before the token generation event, treat the silence as the answer. Second, the unlock table; a 55% insider float with no cliffs is a supply overhang waiting for a date. Third, whether the ecosystem allocation lands in a governance contract or an emissions faucet โ€” because one builds a protocol and the other buys a number.

infiniFi didn't reveal a tokenomics plan this week. It revealed what it chose not to say.
